Marathi Beach Chania Crete

Marathi Beach Chania Crete

Marathi beach is located 17km from Chania, a town on the Greek island of Crete. It’s on the south eastern coast of the peninsula of Akrotiri.

Undoubtedly, Marathi beach is a popular beach among locals and tourists alike because of its close proximity to Chania town.  Also, its position on the bay protects it against wild winds.

A sandy beach with beautifully clear and shallow waters makes it is an ideal spot for families with young children. Marathi beach is divided in two by a picturesque small harbour and pier.  It serves the fishing and excursion boats, small ferries and glass bottom boats that depart to and from Chania port.

Marathi is an organised beach with good facilities including umbrellas and sunbeds and a variety of dining options.  Marathi Beach is lined with taverns, many specialising in seafood, (which is very good here) and local authentic food such as the Cretan Dakos.

Above all, leave your belongings on the beach but remember to take your valuables. Stroll over to a tavern for lunch and then back again for an afternoon siesta by the sea.

In the afternoon, visit Paleosouda (Old Souda), a small pine islet opposite Marathi beach approximately 500 metres. It can be reached by boat or by swimming (if you are competent swimmer).

Additionally, if you’re a history and archaeology enthusiast, visit Ancient Minoa. Follow the road northeast from the beach to reach the coastal road ruins, thought to be the sea port of Aptera.

Finally, continue northwest along the road to see the beautiful seaside church of Saint Spyridon.

Next to Marathi is Loutraki beach. Both are lovely beaches to visit on a trip to Chania in the Greek Island of Crete. Where to stay in Marathi?
