Elafonisi Beach Chania Crete

Elafonisi beach is located on the southwestern corner of Chania on the island of Crete. This should not be confused with Elafonisos on the Peloponnese peninsula, which is equally stunning. Elafonisi is located 73km out of Chania and will take at least one and a half hours to get there, depending on whether you will stop along the way.

Getting there

If you wish to visit this beach, you will need to allow a full day for this experience. The drive to Elafonisi from Chania is quite long as there are sections of the road that are narrow and care needs to be taken. You may also want to stop at some parts to observe the overarching cliffs and valleys along the way. There are stall holders along the side of parts of the road who sell honey products such as bee pollen and royal jelly. You will also find Raki ,which is a distilled spirit known in Crete, for sale along your way.

Facilities

Please note that this beach does get extremely busy. There is ample parking as well as sunbeds and umbrellas, which of course come at a price which you must decide for yourself if this is warranted. Some sections of the beach also play music and have a kiosk for cold drinks and snacks. It is best to ensure you bring drinks and snacks just to be sure you will have something with you that you will like.

Once you arrive at the beach and settle in you will notice a few things. Firstly, the sand is pink. Over time, coral has broken down to create this distinct shoreline. Secondly, the water is absolutely crystal clear. Thirdly, the water is not that cold. As it is quite shallow in parts , it is quite easy to jump straightin. Lastly, it feels like you have entered a lagoon paradise.
